Agliè (TO)

Piedmont

Overlooking the old mediaeval town is a magnificent ducal castle surrounded by a park filled with centuries-old trees and large greenhouses, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Agliè was built over the Roman settlement of Alladium and owes much of its fame to a splendid castle but it also features other delightful vistas, such as the old porticoes in the town centre and its streets, as well as the silence and green space of the small Lake Gerbola and walks around the walls encircling the park.

Must see

Ducal Castle

Originally a fortification, the castle was redeveloped after 1642 and turned into a noble residence by Filippo d’Agliè, adviser to Christine of France. Comprising 300 rooms, the manor house rose to its greatest splendour in the early 19th century when the Savoy family travelled there for vacations and it became one of their holiday homes. It has featured in many TV series.

Church of Santa Marta

Along the ascent to the town is this baroque church of 1760 with a curvilinear façade. The bell tower features an uncommon triangular plan.

Villa Il Meleto

At the foot of the Colle di Macugnano, this was for years the summer home of Guido Gozzano, buried in the church of San Gaudenzio in Agliè. Often celebrated in the poet’s verses, the Villa conserves the Liberty style typical of the early 20th century.

Typical Product

Be sure to try the delicious torcetti di Agliè, a traditional sweet sold in many bakeries in the town centre. A speciality of Piedmontese artisan pastry-making, they are named for their distinctive twisted shape.

Local winemakers produce wines such as Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, made from native grapes, and DOC reds such as Canavese Rosso, Canavese Barbera and Canavese Nebbiolo.
