Campo Tures / Sand in Taufers (BZ)

Trentino-Alto Adige

Perched on an impregnable rocky spur, the castle of Campo Tures has the form and structure of a citadel. The opulence and power of its lords rivalled that of the leading Tyrolean noble families and today it is the best-known destination in Valle di Tures.

Splendidly positioned in the Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina, Campo Tures has a large array of historical and natural attractions. The parish church of the Assunta is a late-Gothic building with an annexed museum displaying artworks from the churches and chapels in the valley, including wooden sculptures, paintings on canvas and sacred vestments.

The noble buildings of note include Casa Neumelans (1583), with a tall roof and corner projections that end in towers. The castle is one of the best conserved in Alto Adige, dating from the 12th-13th centuries although extensions and alterations continued until the 16th century. Visit the small villages of Acereto/Ahornach and Riva di Tures/Rein in Taufers, in the beautiful natural surroundings of Valle di Riva.

Cucina in Strada

For eight weeks in July and August, during the clear summer evenings, the chefs of Campo Tures light up their stoves in the streets of the village to prepare tasty local dishes.

Typical Product

The local pride and joy is Graukäse, or grey cheese from the Aurina Valley, the leanest cheese in the world (two per cent fat!), which should be eaten with raw onion, oil and vinegar.

An acid-coagulated cheese made without rennet, it has a strong flavour and pungent smell, an irregular shape and ancient origins (it was first mentioned in 1325). It is made from the milk left over from butter production.

Every two years, Graukäse takes centre stage at the Käse Festival in Campo Tures, a cheese festival that has established itself as a leading event in the sector.

Taufrisch in Campo Tures, a revolution in biodiversity

It is called ‘Taufrisch’ (dew) and is a horticultural cultivation project involving around a dozen restaurants in Campo Tures. Together, they grow over three hundred varieties, from classic vegetables to ancient, local and very rare ones, which they harvest and transform into delicious dishes, soups, side dishes and desserts. Alongside the vegetables, there is also space for flowers: for the benefit of plant variety, insects and decoration.

With this project, we are working on sustainability and self-sufficiency practices. We have come together to manage half a hectare of land, choosing to grow ancient, almost forgotten crops. In addition, spontaneous blooms immediately attracted wild bees, hornets, birds, butterflies and small insects: biodiversity reigns supreme, and biodiversity generates life.
